Leicester to be locked down
Leicester a well-known city for its cathedral which has been in the heart of the city for more than 900 years and its association to Richard III. Like all cities in the UK Leicester was also hit with the COVID-19 but a recent surge has been seen. The UK government has noticed infection rates quickly rising in this city.
BBC news describes Leicester city as a “city left in limbo”. As we welcome the easing of the lock down in the UK this city may not be able to ease lockdown restrictions.
The nature of the virus was said to be more destructive for the elderly and people with underlying conditions, but it was found that in Leicester the population affected seemed to be children mainly.
So, what does this mean for Leicester?
Matt Hancock our health secretary made an announcement that Leicester will be undergoing stricter lockdown measures. He further claimed that loosening of restrictions to the rest of the UK for example pubs and restaurants will not be taking place in Leicester.
But how far does this apply? Suburbs in Leicester such as Oadby, Birstall and Glenfield will also be included in these stricter restrictions.
Matt Hancock further announced that non-essential shops will be closed by Tuesday and schools for most children by this Thursday.
Travel advice issued to Leicester stated that all non-essential travel must not take place to prevent the spread of the infection. Leicester is now claimed to be holding 10% of the cases in the UK as well as having three times the number of cases in the next highest number of case city.
